Yixing teapots are made from a material called Purple Sand (Zisha), which is only found in near the city of Yixing, a ceramic production center for over 7,000 years. Yixing is located in China’s Jiangsu province, along the Yangtze River Delta. Its Purple Sand possesses nearly human qualities – it is flexible, can breathe, and retains warmth. The famous unglazed, palm-sized Yixing teapots, whose origins date to the early 1600’s, absorb the tea each time used. This accentuates the flavors and aroma of the tea brewed. Thus, each Yixing should be used for only one type of tea. Their remarkable porosity makes Yixing teapots highly sought around the world as the best possible way to steep tea.
